Getting started

Download the app for your device from the download page. Android asks you to allow installs from the app you opened the file with, then installs it. Once Yonto is installed, About checks for new versions and installs them when you choose.

Yonto opens on a small demo library of openly licensed films, the Blender open movies: Big Buck Bunny, Sintel, Tears of Steel and Elephants Dream. They and their posters are © the Blender Foundation, under Creative Commons Attribution licences, and each title’s page in the app gives its credit; Licences lists them all. It is there so you can try every screen before you add anything.

  • On a television, Home shows the picks as a banner, then shelves below it. The icons at the top right are Browse, Search, History and Settings.
  • On a phone or tablet, the tabs are Home, Browse, Search, History and Settings.

Yonto provides no content of its own beyond this demo. Everything else comes from a source you add, and what you add is your responsibility: only use libraries you are entitled to access.

On a phone, the demo library’s card on Home has an Add source button. On any device, go to Settings, then Sources, then Add source. You can also open the source chip at the top left of Home and choose Add source (Add on a television).

The form opens on Jellyfin. The type list at the top lets you pick another kind of source, which Sources explains.

  1. Choose Settings, Sources, Add source.
  2. Leave the type on Jellyfin.
  3. Give the source a name, so you can tell it apart from others later.
  4. Enter the Server URL in full, like https://jellyfin.example.com:8096.
  5. Enter your Username and Password. Leave the password empty if your account has none.
  6. Choose Test connection. A working server answers “Connected successfully”.
  7. Choose Save.

On a phone you land on Home, on your new source. On a television, pressing OK on a field opens an on-screen keyboard, and Back closes it.

When you add a source of your own, the demo library leaves the list. Delete your last source and the demo comes back.

Yonto is free with the demo library and one source of your own. Yonto Pro is a one-time purchase that adds as many sources as you like and installing plugins, on every Yonto app. Adding a second source of your own, from Add source or from a repo, asks for Pro, and so does installing a plugin. The sources you already have stay.

Your licence key comes by email after you buy. To turn Pro on:

  • On a phone or tablet, open the link in that email, or scan the code it shows on a computer, and Yonto turns Pro on. Or go to Settings, then Yonto Pro, enter the key and choose Activate.
  • On a television, go to Settings, then Yonto Pro, and choose Activate with your phone. Scan its code with your phone, or open the address it shows and enter the code, then enter your key.

Open the source chip at the top left of Home to see your sources, and pick one. Continue Watching and History are shared by every source.

Yonto remembers where you stopped in each title. Continue Watching on Home takes you straight back, and History (Watch History) lists everything you have played. On a phone, each entry has a menu with Details and Remove, and Clear All is in the bar’s menu. On a television, press and hold an entry to remove it.
